          The voyage of globalization could be viewed in various ways. Viewing the history in a economic perspective, through the examination of the past century, Jeffry Frieden provided us a quite vivid history of capitalism. In this book, he discussed several tools and motivations which helped the development of free trade and globalization. On the another hand, from what he had written, the globalization is not inevitable, or at least there were certain kind of powers which played significant role in globalization, were not necessarily should happened to be certain. In terms of these powers, there are mainly three types, which could necessarily divide the process of capital globalization into three.

          In the first stage, from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, individuals, especially elites, played significant roles. Frieden put great attention over some particular families, particularly the Rothschild. By the 19th century, mercantilism had set up barriers which prevented the further development of trade. Thus businessmen who were seeking greatest profits began to search ways to overcome this barrier. What happened next is that these international businessmen, through their own influence to the government, had largely facilitated the development of free trade. Their oversea investment intensified and increased, helped the development of globalization at its very beginning. Without their persistence, the free trade and the beginning of globalization would happen later.

          The 19th century had created another tool to impulse the free trade—the gold standard. Frieden is obviously the advocator of the gold standard. As the most sufficient and stable monetary system, the gold standard had brought multiple nations into a framework of trade. As long as the gold standard became the standard of the world monetary system, the internationalization became more and more intensive. None of the nations could solve their own problem by themselves. This gold standard banded them together.

         Although government played dedicated role in the process of globalization, it was particularly intensive in the early 20th century and 60-70s. Part of reason could attribute to the insecure feeling of the governments as they just suffered from wars and economic slumps. On the other hand, the macro-manipulation from the government perspective could somehow appease the disparities of their domestic markets. However, these self-alienated policies inevitably created barriers and prevented the further development of the global free trade. Thus the creation of international and global organizations appeared to play important roles in dismiss the barriers and provide a even more broad view of macro-manipulation.

          Generally, Frieden offered us a relatively optimistic view of the globalization as he believed it could bring the mutual-benefits for all the countries and it was a positive some game. As a professor in Government Department at Harvard University, he emphasized the importance of the government in the process of globalization. As a book finished in 2006, it did not cover the difficulties in the process of globalization, especially the global slump since 2008, yet Frieden’s positive attitude towards globalization gives people confidence to overcome this slump.
