  文章辨析了mourning和melancholia("pathological mourning")。两者都由环境因素引起，都造成一定时间内对正常生活的偏离。差异在于mourning中libido从原attachments中抽离并附着于新object，而melancholia中libido抽离后一部分附着于ego，患者在放弃原object时并未放弃love relation，并将object-love转化成narcissistic identification，另一部分作为hate towards the substitutive object造成自杀倾向。Regression to narcissism似是ego的胜利（主体试图收编客体），实为object的凯旋（主体客体化）。
